Drywall is heavy, awkward to transport, and annoying to return — three good reasons to get the count right the first time. Our drywall calculator above converts a room’s dimensions into sheets (in your choice of size), plus working estimates for screws and joint tape, with 10% cutting waste included.

How Sheet Count Is Calculated

Surface area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Wall height, plus Length × Width if the ceiling is included

Sheets = Surface area × 1.10 ÷ Sheet area, rounded up

A 12 × 12 room with 8-foot walls has 384 sq ft of wall; add the 144 sq ft ceiling and you’re at 528 sq ft. With 10% waste, that’s 19 sheets of 4×8 drywall.

The 10% waste is not pessimism — every window, door, outlet box, and corner generates cuts, and drywall offcuts are rarely reusable because the tapered factory edges matter for finishing.

Choosing a Sheet Size

4 × 8 ft (32 sq ft) — the default. One person can (barely) handle it, it fits in most vehicles with the seats down, and it suits 8-foot ceilings hung horizontally.

4 × 12 ft (48 sq ft) — the pro’s choice for long walls. Fewer sheets means fewer joints to tape and mud, which is where all the finishing labor lives. But a 12-foot sheet of 1/2″ drywall weighs over 80 lbs and needs two people and a truck.

4 × 10 ft (40 sq ft) — the compromise for 9-foot ceilings hung vertically, or mid-length walls.

Rule of thumb: the biggest sheet you can safely transport and lift saves you finishing time later. Every joint you eliminate is a joint you never have to tape, mud three times, and sand.

Thickness Guide

  • 1/2 inch — standard walls and ceilings on 16″ centers.
  • 5/8 inch — ceilings on 24″ centers (resists sagging) and anywhere fire-rated Type X is required, like attached garages.
  • 1/4–3/8 inch — curved walls and overlays on existing surfaces.
  • Moisture-resistant (green/purple board) — bathrooms and laundry rooms; use cement board, not drywall, behind tile in wet zones.

Screws, Tape, and Mud

Our calculator estimates about 1 screw per square foot — that’s the practical average with studs at 16″ centers (roughly 32 screws per 4×8 sheet). Buy 1-1/4″ coarse-thread screws for wood studs.

Joint tape runs about 37 feet per 100 sq ft of drywall. Paper tape is stronger for corners; mesh is easier for flats.

Joint compound: plan on roughly one 4.5-gallon bucket of all-purpose mud per 450–500 sq ft of drywall for a full three-coat finish. Half of finishing skill is patience between coats — don’t rush the dry times.

Hanging Tips That Reduce Waste

  • Hang horizontally on walls in most rooms: it bridges more studs, strengthens the wall, and puts the seam at a convenient working height.
  • Start ceilings first, then walls — wall sheets support ceiling edges.
  • Plan your layout on paper before cutting: shifting a starting point can turn two slivers into one clean piece.
  • Never line up joints with door/window corners — cracks radiate from those corners over time. Cut sheets in an L around openings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sheets for a 12×12 room? 19 sheets of 4×8 with the ceiling, 13–14 without, including waste.

How much does a sheet of drywall weigh? A 4×8 sheet of 1/2″ standard drywall is about 51 lbs; 5/8″ Type X is around 70 lbs; “ultralight” 1/2″ versions run about 38 lbs.

Should I subtract windows and doors? For typical rooms, no — the waste from cutting around them roughly cancels the opening area. For a wall dominated by glass (patio slider wall), subtract the opening.

The one-screw-per-square-foot rule this calculator uses was checked against several manufacturer fastening schedules before we adopted it. It holds for 16-inch stud spacing with 4×8 sheets, roughly 32 screws per sheet. On 24-inch centers the count drops, so rather than quietly averaging the two we assume 16-inch framing and say so.
