Trim is sold by the piece, cut at angles, and wasted at every corner — which is why the “just measure the walls” approach reliably comes up short. Our baseboard calculator above takes your room perimeter, subtracts the door openings, adds 10% for miter cuts, and converts the result into the number of 8, 12, or 16-foot pieces to buy.

The Calculation

Trim needed = (Room perimeter − Door opening widths) × 1.10

Pieces = Trim needed ÷ Piece length, rounded up

The 10% waste factor is the heart of it. Every inside and outside corner gets a mitered cut, every splice on a long wall needs an angled scarf joint, and every piece must start and end somewhere — you can’t use a 14-inch offcut to finish a 3-foot run and have it look right. Complex rooms with lots of corners, or first-time trim carpenters, should mentally round toward 15%.

Measuring the Perimeter

Walk the room with a tape measure and add up every wall segment at floor level — including the short jogs around closets, bump-outs, and pantries that eyeball estimates always miss. Subtract only door openings and floor-to-ceiling openings; windows don’t touch the baseboard line.

For whole-house projects, do this room by room and keep the totals separate. Trim profiles and even paint sheen often differ between rooms, and separate totals let you adjust one room without re-measuring everything.

Choosing Piece Length

Longer is better, within reason:

16-foot pieces produce the fewest joints — often zero on a typical bedroom wall. Fewer joints means faster installation and cleaner lines. The catch is transport: 16-footers need a truck, a roof rack, or delivery.

12-foot pieces cover most walls in one run and fit in more vehicles diagonally.

8-foot pieces fit in almost anything but guarantee splices on longer walls. Fine for closets and small rooms.

A practical strategy: note your longest wall. If a single piece can span it, buy that length for the visible rooms and use shorter stock in closets.

MDF, Pine, or PVC?

Primed MDF — the budget favorite: straight, knot-free, takes paint beautifully. Weak against moisture and dents; keep it out of bathrooms.

Finger-jointed pine — costs a bit more, holds nails better, moderately moisture-tolerant when primed.

Solid pine or hardwood — for stain-grade work where the wood itself shows.

PVC/polymer — waterproof and ideal for bathrooms and laundry rooms; cuts like wood, needs paint formulated for plastics or comes pre-finished.

Installation Notes

  • Cut inside corners with a coped joint rather than two 45s — coped joints stay tight when seasonal movement opens mitered ones.
  • Find and mark studs first; nail into framing, not just drywall.
  • Buy or rent a miter saw — clean angles are the difference between “professional” and “noticeable.”
  • Caulk the top edge and fill nail holes before painting; that final 30 minutes is where the finished look comes from.
  • Pair with quarter-round or shoe molding if you’re covering the expansion gap of a new floating floor — add the same linear footage again for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much baseboard for a 12×12 room? Perimeter 48 ft, minus one 3 ft door = 45 ft; with waste, about 50 linear ft — seven 8-ft pieces or four 16-ft pieces.

Do I subtract windows? No. Baseboard runs under windows; only openings that reach the floor (doors, archways) get subtracted.

What about matching door and window casing? Casing is measured separately: roughly 17 linear ft per door (both sides of a standard door) and 14–16 ft per window with stool and apron. Add it as its own line item.
