The Calculation
Number of risers = Total rise ÷ Target riser height, rounded to the nearest whole number
Actual riser height = Total rise ÷ Number of risers
Treads = Risers − 1 (the top landing acts as the final “tread”)
Total run = Treads × Tread depth
Example: a deck 45 inches off the ground with a 7.5-inch target gives 6 risers of exactly 7.5 inches, 5 treads, and — at 10.5 inches of tread depth — a staircase extending about 4 ft 5 in from the deck.
The crucial discipline: every riser must be identical. Your feet memorize the rhythm of a staircase within two steps; a single odd riser — even 3/8 inch off — is a documented trip hazard and the first thing inspectors measure. That’s why the calculator divides the total rise evenly rather than stacking fixed 7.5-inch steps until it runs out.
The Code Numbers That Matter (US Residential)
- Maximum riser height: 7¾ inches (many jurisdictions and stair pros prefer ≤ 7½)
- Minimum tread depth: 10 inches (11 with certain nosing configurations)
- Riser uniformity: within 3/8 inch between the tallest and shortest riser
- Minimum stair width: 36 inches
- Headroom: 6 ft 8 in measured vertically from the tread nosing line
- Comfort rule of thumb: riser + tread ≈ 17–18 inches (e.g., 7.5 + 10.5 = 18 ✓)

Measuring Total Rise Correctly
Total rise is the vertical distance from finished lower surface to finished upper surface — and “finished” is the trap. If the stairs land on a future patio, or the upper floor is getting 3/4-inch hardwood later, include those thicknesses now. Measure at the exact spot where the stairs will land, not at the deck edge: ground slopes, and a 45-inch rise at the house can be 48 inches six feet out.
For long stairs, use a level board extended from the upper surface and measure down to the landing point.
From Numbers to Lumber
Stringers — the diagonal boards the steps sit on — are cut from 2×12s. You need the stringer length to buy lumber: roughly √(rise² + run²) plus a foot of margin. Three stringers minimum for 36-inch-wide stairs; four if using thin composite treads.
Pre-cut stringers from lumberyards come in fixed riser counts with ~7-inch risers — convenient, but only if their geometry matches your rise. Check before buying; “close enough” is exactly what stair code forbids.
Treads: each tread typically uses two 2×6 boards (giving ~11 inches with overhang). Multiply by tread count and add the usual cutting margin.

What’s the most comfortable riser height? Most people find 7 to 7.5 inches ideal. Shallower (6–6.5) suits outdoor “grand” steps; anything over 7.75 feels steep and fails most codes.
Do deck stairs need a permit? Usually the deck permit covers them, but stairs above a certain rise (often 30 inches) trigger railing requirements: graspable handrail 34–38 inches above the nosings, and guards on open sides.
